Ayurveda and Dosha: what, why, and how?
Ayurveda and Dosha: what, why, and how?
On Sunday I took part in workshops organised by True Yoga and Essential centre (you can find the link to their page here).
That wasn't the first time when I went for an event organised by them. From the very first time, I participated in a workshop called 'Let go of anger with yin-yoga and essential oils'. It was a great opportunity to learn new things about how to take care of yourself, your body, and your mind. The good energy of the teacher, Dessi, fascinated me and I decided to attend every possible event they would organise in the future.
Sunday's 'Balance and Wellness through Yoga and Ayurveda' was another very new experience for me. The workshop took place in a very nice place owned by Debby Pinto, a multi-talented artist from Groningen. Debbi has an amazing art studio where she also organises artistic workshops of photography or painting. The link to her webpage is right here. I think, that the place itself is always the very important part of any workshops, especially, these where you really have to feel comfortable and relaxed. Debby's studio was just the right place. It was full of art pieces, old cameras, and plants. When looking up, you could see sunlights and blue sky (it was finally sunny in Groningen!) through the windows.
The event was four-hour long with a lunch break. During this time the group of ten people, including me could get to know basic knowledge of what Ayurveda and Dosha are. I came there with the intention to get more knowledge of how to take care of myself doing the Autumn season. And, actually, my prayer was heard!
But let me start with explaining what Ayurveda and Dosha actually are. Ayurveda is a traditional system of medication of India, which started being recorded over five thousands years ago, but we don't know when it actually happened. It could be millions years of a tradition! The core of Ayurveda is to harmonise body, mind, and soul within holistic methods. Three Doshas, that is, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are three primary elements in Ayurveda. It is said that these three elements are present in every person, and, in each person there is one or two which are dominant. The balance between all three results in a healthy lifestyle. Although, because of the times we are living in noways, where the world is full of toxins, stress, and people are in constant hurry, keeping the balance within ourselves and with the world demands from us more work and time.
At the workshop, we focused on three main things: yoga positions and breathing practices which were helpful to bring each Dosha into balance again and the lunch, prepared by Renee (the second teacher), which was suitable for all Doshas ( and it was amazingly delicious).
Before all that, however, each of participant learned which one of Doshas are dominant in theirselves and received some useful tips on how to prepare for the Autumn season, that in Ayurveda, lasts from November to February. If you're more interested in what each Dosha means, I really recommend you to check this website, where you can find recipes or exercise routines for each Dosha and many more helpful information on Ayurvedic lifestyle).
The tips that I can now pass along to you and which I also will introduce to my life are pretty easy to keep. During the cold season like Autumn, Vata is the dominant Dosha and its elements are air and space. The wind is then the strongest and there is a rapid change of temperature, during this time it is important to eat filling and warming meals. Something that is a total contrariety for food, like chips or crackers, light just like a wind.
For Pitta these are fire and water, and for Kapha - earth and water. The goal here is to eat meals that are an opposite to a current season. So, when there's Spring coming and the atmosphere is warm and kind of sticky, then the dominant Dosha is Pitta. To balance it we should should eat meals that are light made of products that are usually raw, like salads. In other words, in Ayurveda, if you observe one thing, you do the opposite. For instance, when you're feeling sleepy, lazy, or tired, you go and work out! Makes sense?
Let's say, you are feeling low and it's obvious that you need more positive energy , endorphins, but what we usually do then is laying on the sofa and watching a movie, because we're so tired and there's no chance to get up and be active. On the other hand, if we are in need of endorphins, the easiest way to get them is to.. work out!
To make this concept clearer and closer to your heart, the process should be based on the development of understanding, acceptance, and careful listening of yourself along with these 'tips' mentioned earlier. Like every thing in life, it takes time. It takes time to balance your body, your mind, and your spirit and to create the whole. The perfect version of yourself. Workshops like this show me every time how important it is to keep on creating the best version of you and to keep on rising. It makes you feel better, makes you love yourself more, and the world as well!
If someone lives in Groningen and is interested in this kind of workshops, I would be very grateful for joining me in next events of True Yoga!
I am very sorry for not adding any pictures from the event, but by accident I deleted them from my phone!! :(
I wish you all good night and till the next post!
For even better night I am posting specially for you the Tiny Desk Concert of Alt-J, which will turn your evening into a safe, enjoyable moment of you life, at least, that is what it did to my evening... :)
